Step 04

Propylene glycol coolant for liquid cooling loops

Inhibited, or not a coolant. Carbon steel: 0.01 mpy inhibited at 40 % PG against 23.65 mpy raw, a 2 365× difference on one test.

01 / Freeze point

One curve

The 25 % point is corroborated at −11 °C by ASTM D1177.

Published freeze-point curve. One curve only.

30 %−13.3 °CEMS-CL-PG30

50 %−35.0 °CEMS-CL-PG50
55 %−43.3 °CEMS-CL-PG55

Minimum 25 % mix. At 20 %, frost protection to about −9 °C.

02 / Viscosity

Concentration moves every meter

Viscosity moves the Reynolds number, so it moves meter turndown.

03 / Water quality

Two loops, two bands

Glycol is a weak electrolyte, so a premix loop cannot hold the de-ionised band at 5 µS/cm.

Two columns, one per loop type.
Parameter Facility water / glycol-premix loop De-ionised technology cooling loop
Conductivity50–300 µS/cm0.2–20 µS/cm

Bacteria, CFU/mL below1 000100

Conductivity and pH are not interchangeable between the two loops. Measured on coolant filtration.

04 / Inhibitor state

Reserve alkalinity is a test

Reserve alkalinity determines corrosion protection, to ASTM D1121.

ICP metals and anionsWhat the fluid has taken up

A vacuum fill can separate glycol, so sample after it.

05 / Prohibitions

Four prohibitions

Automotive antifreeze

Automatic water make-up

Sulfur-cured EPDM

Sulfur cure adds sulfate against a limit below 10 ppm.

Brass above 15 % zinc

ISO 6509 dezincification depth 100 µm or less. Dilution water below 25 ppm chloride.

08 / Scope

What the documents carry

Twelve parameter rows minimum per grade.

Commissioning staging — 100, 50, 25 µm — belongs to flush skids, not a protection rating or a strainer rating.

Specification request

Ask for the specification sheet

Leave your work email and the model code. Send the loop volume, the target freeze point and the system metals with the code.

  • A specification table of at least twelve rows per grade, with the concentration, freeze-point, viscosity and pH band rows.
  • The safety data sheet with the delivery documentation, and the sampling panel that establishes the inhibitor-depletion pattern.
  • One working day for a reply, with the datasheet, the safety data sheet and the lead time.
