Leak detection selection guide
Reversing this order buys the wrong system. Capacity comes last, because it carries the only published ceiling.

Match the principle to the fluid
| Fluid | Principle | Precondition |
|---|---|---|
| Conductive | Distance-read cable | Default |
| Propylene glycol | Glycol rope | 15 % PG up |
| Direct detection | Two preconditions | Reaches; conducts |
| Near-DI, immersion | Capacitive · fibre-optic · acoustic | A rope may not read |
| Micro-leaks | Pressure decay · mass balance | No distance |
A competing family is tested from 10 % to 55 % propylene glycol. No ingress protection rating is published in this category.
Settle it on the cost of searching
| Parameter | Published |
|---|---|
| Cable per controller | 305 m · 1,524 m · 3,048 m |
| Minimum usable length | 10.67 m, distance-read |
| Virtual zones | 32 per controller |
| Sub-controllers, head end | 127 |
| Non-locating report | Zone |
| Distance-read report | Metre |
One clearance and two spacings
| Rule | Figure |
|---|---|
| Clearance, downflow air | 1.8 m |
| Alarm rate inside it | twice a day, no leak |
| Clips | 3–4 ft · about 1 m |
| Caution tags | 10 ft · 3 m |
| 305 m run | 250–330 clips, 100 tags |
| Bend radius · temp. | 12.70 mm · 0–75 °C |
| Plenum rating | CL2P |
Why a dirty cable and a wet cable look the same
| Signal | Current | Held |
|---|---|---|
| about 300 µA | — | |
| 150 µA | 20 s | |
| 50 µA · 25–300 adj. | 120 s | |
| Field contamination | 1–300 µA | — |
| Clean cable | 15 mA and below | — |
Solder flux, floor-sealing chemicals, metallic swarf and a dropped floor tile all push current into that band.
Set thresholds against the site
Set them at commissioning, against the site. The published trade-off: a low threshold for mission-critical areas, a higher one to suppress condensation nuisance alarms.
| Setting | Distance-read | Single-zone |
|---|---|---|
| Response time | 5–990 s, 5 s steps, ±2 s | 10 s or 2 min, ±10 % |
| Probe height | 0–4.8 mm · 4.27 m leader | — |
The cable is not the system
Worked: 300 m across two rows, one controller.
| Item | Status | Quantity | Code |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leader cable, 4.57 m | mandatory | 1 per controller | EMS-LD-T2 |
| Terminator | mandatory | 1 per loop | EMS-LD-T1 |
| Clips, about 1 m | mandatory | about 300 | EMS-LD-T3 |
| Caution tags, 3 m | mandatory | about 100 | EMS-LD-T4 |
| Jumper, 3.05 m | conditional, per crossing | 1 each | EMS-LD-X15 |
Without the terminator there is no cable-break supervision. A distance-read panel averages two simultaneous wet points, so a crossing takes a jumper.
Position resolution is not locating repeatability
| Parameter | Published value |
|---|---|
| 0.1 m — printed granularity | |
| ±0.6 m plus 0.5 % of length | |
| ±0.6 m plus 0.25 % of length |
On a 3,048 m cable the 0.5 % term alone is 15 m. Buy resolution for the map, repeatability for the second visit.
